JUSTIN KOVACEVICH, MONTGOMERY
6-5, 200, SENIOR, FORWARD
JUST THE FACTS: Kovacevich is averaging 18.7 points per game and has Montgomery remaining as one of the last undefeated teams in the entire state. He went off for 29 points against Warren Hills on Jan. 4, and more recently hit a buzzer-beater to top Rutgers Prep and finished with 25 points. The senior is approaching the 1,000 point mark for his career.
COACH’S QUOTE: “Justin has done everything we have asked of him and more this season. He realizes how special this team is and is happy just to be a part of it. He is not one of those guys that has to take the most shots, or get the most rebounds. As long as the team wins, he is happy.” – Montgomery coach Kris Grundy.
HITTING THE GAME-WINNER AGAINST RUTGERS PREP: “The whole game was just a really physical game. It was close the whole way through. At the end, we had four seconds left. I got it inbounded to me. I missed the first short shot and then got the rebound and was able to put it back in at the buzzer. It was pretty exciting at the end.”
COMING TOGETHER: “This season, I think we’re all just having a lot of fun. It’s great to be winning, and all the guys this year are really close so it’s just been fun to be around.”
TOPPING RIDGE: “We were just so pumped up for that game, to get out of there with the win was a great feeling.”
SCORING WITH EASE:”First of all, I think I’m one of the more physical players on the team. I’m a good inside presence. I try to get rebounds, and this year because we have so many great shooters, I’m able to drive and kick it out to my teammates and they’ll knock down shots. I try to do a little bit of everything.”
BIGGEST STRENGTH: “Probably just getting to the basket and finishing strong and through contact.”
WORKING ON: “Last year, I’d pick up a lot of charges. I’d drive to the hoop a little out of control. This year, I’ve been more in control. I can pull up and find teammates.”
TEAM’S POTENTIAL: “Every year we have the same goal: Conference, county and states. This year, we’ve beaten two of the better teams in the county already, so we’re looking to make a good run in the tournament and then also, in states we should be able to have a pretty good run, I’ll say.”
